Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965 as amended by the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994 provides supplemental educational services for eligible public and private school students to assist those children in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to meet challenging student performance standards. Federal legislation has provided guidelines for the selection of schools, for the selection of students, and for parental involvement. In order for students to be eligible for FREE tutoring, the student MUST attend a Title I school that has been identified as in need of improvement AND be eligible for free or reduced price lunch for the 2010-2011 school year.
In 2009 Osceola County Schools became a supplemental educational services (SES) provider to expand the delivery and quality of the SES services being provided in the district. The district's program is called Osceola's World of Learning (O.W.L.). Osceola County Schools' teachers are recruited, hired and paid to tutor.
O.W.L. offers:
- Tutoring sessions to ALL eligible students in grades Third through Eighth .
- Help in Reading/Language Arts, Math and/or FCAT Standards
- Sessions that are held at the student's school.
- Small group settings of no more than five students.
- Sessions that may last 60 minutes or 120 minutes.
- Sessions that are conducted up three times a week depending on total minutes tutored.
- A Total of 20 hours of high quality tutoring sessions per school year.
